Site Capabilities

Disposal Capabilities

  • Current permit allows for safe disposal of 5,423,000 cubic yards of Land Disposal Restriction (LDR) compliant hazardous waste 
  • Near-surface disposal in a designated landfill of 2,100,000 cubic yards of LLW and MLLW generated/owned by the federal   government of which approximately 900,000 cubic yards is expected to be canister disposal and 1,200,000 cubic yards is expected to be non-canister (bulk) disposal. 
  • Near-surface disposal in a designated landfill of 100,000 cubic yards of LLW generated within the Texas Compact (Texas and Vermont).
  • Near-surface disposal in a designated landfill of 1,000,000 cubic yards of by-product material generated by the federal government and the commercial/private sector.
  • Exempt radioactive waste meeting the following criteria:
    • Source material with <0.05% by weight of U and Th equivalent to U-238 up to 166.5 pCi/gm and Th-232 up to 54.5 pCi/gm
    • Finished products or parts containing metal Th alloys with Th <4% by weight
    • Specifically exempt items manufactured under a specific license that authorizes the transfer to exempt persons
    • Naturally Occurring Radioactive Material (NORM) containing Ra-226 or Ra-228 at less than 30 pCi/gm or any other NORM radionuclide less than 150 pCi/gm
    • Unrefined or unprocessed ores containing source material (U or Th)
    • Rare earth metals, compounds, mixtures, or products containing <0.25% by weight of Th or U or any combination thereof
    • Depleted U in counterweights installed in aircraft, rockets, projectiles, or missiles
    • Any other specific item exempt from licensing under Texas rules

Storage Capabilities

  • No time limit for certain radioactive and mixed waste
  • Not to exceed 1,802,865 cubic feet at any time with the following building/area limitations:
    • Up to 8,000 cubic feet in the Stabilization Building
    • Up to 36,750 cubic feet in the Container Storage Building, including up to 5,000 “55-gallon drum equivalents” of untreated RCRA, exempt, and non-hazardous wastes
    • Up to 87,480 cubic feet of low specific activity waste in each of the Bin Storage Units (BSU) 1-3 (BSU 2 and 3 are also referred to as the Container  Storage Area) for a total of 262,440 cubic feet
    • Up to 1,500,000 cubic feet of low specific activity waste (radioactive only, including 11e(2) byproduct material) on the 10-acre LSA Storage Pad

Treatment Capabilities

  • Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) and Toxic Substance Control Act (TSCA) wastes treated in the Stabilization Facility 
  • Mixed Low Level Waste (MLLW) treated in the Mixed Waste Treatment Facility (MWTF) under negative-pressure in an 85 cubic yards pan. Additional double and triple containment is available 
  • Decontamination, segregation, and sorting LLW and MLLW 
  • Free release of solid articles of LLW and MLLW 
  • LLW and MLLW characterization 
  • Stabilization, consolidation, shredding, and repackaging of RCRA, TSCA, LLW, and MLLW, including K061 contaminated with Cesium and Americium
  • Dewatering services are provided for disposals that require it. At WCS, our dewatering process leaves your waste as dry as possible and helps ensure that our facilites remain the safest in the nation.

Types of waste

  • Inorganic waste streams including acids, bases, and wastes contaminated with metals 
  • Organic waste streams (with concentration limitations)
  • Water-reactive inorganic materials such as elemental lithium, sodium, etc. 
  • MLLW with a high content of volatile organic compounds (VOC) can be treated on a case-by-case basis
  • Shredding of debris so that it can be treated by methods other than encapsulation 
  • Hazardous and non-hazardous wastes mixed with Class A, B, C, and Greater than Class C (GTCC) LLW, and transuranic radioactive waste (TRU)

  • Containerized shipments, e.g. van and flatbed trailers
